Serena Williams, GLP-1, and The Message We're Sending Women Over 40

Serena Williams, GLP-1, and The Message were sending women over 40

For years, Serena Williams has been more than an athlete; she’s been a symbol of power, resilience, and the incredible results of dedicated hard work. As a health and wellness advocate, I’ve often pointed to her as the pinnacle of what’s possible through discipline. Which is why the recent news about her use of a GLP-1 medication for weight loss hit me with a profound sense of disappointment.

Let me be perfectly clear: This is not an attack on medication. GLP-1 agonists can be life-changing tools for those with specific medical conditions. My concern lies in the platform, the narrative, and the missed opportunity for a much deeper conversation about women’s health, especially for those of us navigating the complex journey of being over 40.

The Dissonance of a Superhuman Narrative

Serena has been vocal about her post-baby weight loss journey, emphasizing intense physical training and effort. This narrative of superhuman willpower is what made her relatable in her struggle, yet awe-inspiring in her dedication. To now learn that a pharmaceutical intervention was a significant part of that equation creates a narrative dissonance.

The unspoken message becomes: "If even Serena Williams can't do it through diet and exercise alone, what hope do I have?" It risks undermining the confidence of countless women who are working hard to build healthy habits every single day.

The Over-40 Reality: It’s Rarely Just One Thing

For women over 40, weight management is rarely a simple equation of calories in versus calories out. It’s a multifaceted issue rooted in:

Hormonal Shifts: Fluctuating estrogen, progesterone, and cortisol levels directly impact metabolism, fat storage, and appetite.
Nutritional Needs: Our bodies need different nutrients to support muscle mass, bone density, and energy production as we age.
Sleep Quality: Poor sleep disrupts hunger hormones (ghrelin and leptin) and increases cravings.
Stress Management: Chronic stress elevates cortisol, promoting abdominal fat storage.

The solution isn’t a single magic bullet—it’s a holistic approach that addresses all these pillars. This is the conversation I wish a figure like Serena was having.

The Missing Conversation on Sustainability and Side Effects

These medications are not without significant side effects—nausea, vomiting, gastroparesis, and more—and they often require a long-term commitment. The most powerful tool they provide is appetite suppression, but what happens when you stop? Without a foundation of healthy eating habits, portion control, and a balanced lifestyle, the weight can easily return.

The sustainable path to "aging well" isn’t found in a prescription alone; it’s built in the daily choices that create lasting health: strength training, eating protein-rich whole foods, prioritizing sleep, and managing stress. These are the non-negotiable habits that create balance and vitality for the long haul.

A Call for Transparency and Holistic Health

My disappointment stems from a place of care. With great platform comes great responsibility. The opportunity was there to say:
"This is a tool I'm using, but it's not the whole story. I'm also focusing on my nutrition, my sleep, and managing the stress of being a mom and an entrepreneur. Here’s how you can build those foundational habits, too."

That conversation would have empowered women. It would have been real.

At Real Healthy Haven, we believe in a balanced approach. It’s about finding what works for your unique body and building a lifestyle that supports your health forever, not just for now.
